This points to the mark of manifestation. Since it has already become false, it is called 'not real.' Yet seeking to return, unreal marks instantly appear; this is precisely the transformed shadow of the real turning into the various marks of the mundane world. Their substance is empty, hence they are called 'unreal marks.' 'Unreal' is equivalent to 'false.' This is a general statement, and below 'unreal arising' they are listed separately. Arising suddenly where there was nothing is 'arising'; pausing temporarily after having arisen is 'abiding'; the continuity of cognitive deliberation is 'mind'; the differences of defilement and purity are 'phenomena.' Because their substance is originally unreal, all are called 'unreal.' Among them, 'unreal mind' refers to the first two coarse marks among the six coarse marks.
