7.192

Mutation is not constant, borrowing the new to replace the old; wherever they touch sensory objects, corresponding with their thought, they undergo birth immediately. As for 'chaotic thoughts of the new and the old,' the cause is failing to follow benevolence and righteousness, wearying of the old and grasping at the new, merely indulging one's own desires, loving that and forgetting this, borrowing unreally, and changing to undergo different bodies. Furthermore, the initial substance of transformation-birth hardens upon the touch of wind; having no original form, it is established through touch. This takes undergoing different bodies as what is called transformation; hence it is said, 'molting.' 'Ghana' means 'hardened flesh.'
