The five pungent roots are called auxiliary causes, because they can assist the karma of defilement. Lust, stealing, killing, and lying are called the direct nature, because they are the root of birth and death and the enemies of liberation. Faculties and dusts pairing together, flowing out and rushing about, are precisely the active function of the present karma of avidyā. Therefore one removes and discards them, hollows them out to empty them, and goes contrary to and turns against them. If the three practices gradually become prominent and the efficacy is gradually accomplished, the six functions will not operate, turning back the flow into complete oneness; wondrous, perfect, and impartial, body and mind will be joyful and serene, and this person will immediately obtain the forbearance of non-arising dharmas.
