"Buddha's awakening" is the fruition-wisdom. As the preceding text says: "Original awakening is tranquil and pure; awakening equals the Buddha's awakening; the pure and true becomes luminous, and the ground is like the ground of the Buddhas." This is precisely taking the Buddha's fruition-wisdom as one's own causal mind. Yet one has not yet been able to leave the cause to manifest the fruit; hence it says "as if about to emerge yet not emerged." Being close to ascending the grounds, about to bring forth this wisdom, it says "as if about to emerge." Still restricted by causal characteristics and not yet able to leave them, it says "not emerged." It is compared to drilling for fire: the sign of heat appears first, and the fire will emerge before long. Fire represents the Buddha's awakening; drilling represents intensified practice; wood represents causal characteristics. When fire emerges, wood is consumed; when awakening manifests, the cause is extinguished. Extinction of the cause is imminent, hence it is compared to heat; this is revealed in terms of bringing forth wisdom.
