Bodhi is the Buddha's awakening. Previously it was as if about to emerge yet not emerged, like the sign prior to fire, named Heat; now it is like fire emerging and wood consumed, ash flying and smoke vanishing, hence it says "skillfully penetrates." Therefore this first ground is named the stage of breakthrough; "fully exhausting the Buddha-realm" means the principle is revealed. Because one attains non-conceptual wisdom and skillfully penetrates the single true equality of the dharmadhātu, leaving the characteristics of subject and object, Vijñaptimātratā says: "When regarding the object, wisdom is completely without attainment; at that time one abides in consciousness-only, free from the characteristics of the two graspers." It also says: "Skillfully penetrating the dharmadhātu, attaining the single true equality, up to attaining all-pervading tathatā, leaving the obstacle of the nature of ordinary beings, and cultivating the dāna-pāramitā predominantly." Speaking of "all-pervading": because this tathatā pervades all conditioned dharmas and is now realized, attaining sovereignty in benefiting oneself and benefiting others, it is named the Joyous Ground. The Avataṃsaka and Benevolent Kings extensively clarify its characteristics; they are not fully recorded now, and the following stages are all modeled on this.
