文殊智德此會率先，阿難遭難登伽，佛令持呪往救；大眾茫然失守，亦為旁問見元；諸聖各說圓通，如來勅其慎選。洎今解行圓畢，因果克周，故問經名以流後代。一會能事歸此人也。

Mañjuśrī's wisdom and virtue took the lead in this assembly: when Ānanda encountered danger with Mātaṅgī, the Buddha ordered him to hold the mantra and go rescue him; when the great assembly was bewildered and lost, he also asked from the side about the origin of seeing; when the various sages each expounded perfect penetration, the Tathāgata commanded him to carefully select among them. Now that understanding and practice are fully completed and cause and fruition are brought to full cycle, he inquires about the sūtra's title so that it may circulate to future generations. The great tasks of this entire assembly devolve upon this person.
