8.369

由因致果也。貪即是愛根本之數，正能潤生，於有有具染著為性。由愛著故種種計校，求取前境，故云交計相吸也。貪取不止，如水結氷堅住不散，遂成凍冽。此釋貪久成業以致果也。喻文可見。

Proceeding from cause to fruit. Greed is the root category of craving, which directly moistens rebirth, having as its nature defiled attachment to existence and the requisites for existence. Due to craving and attachment, one calculates in various ways to seek and grasp the object before oneself; hence it is called 'mutual calculation and mutual inhalation'. Greedily grasping without cease is like water freezing into ice, remaining solid and undispersed, thus resulting in intense freezing. This explains how prolonged greed becomes karma to yield retribution. The text's metaphor makes this clear.
