Since the creation of karma emerges from the six sense faculties, the reception of retribution also returns to the six sense faculties. Because cause and fruit intertwine, they are called 'reciprocal retributions.' Furthermore, when a single sense faculty below receives retribution, it fully undergoes that of all six faculties, and every single faculty is just like this; hence they are called 'reciprocal retributions.' Saying here that 'the six consciousnesses create karma' is tentatively based on their general characteristic. 'Karma' has the meaning of bringing about and provoking, yet it applies both to the general and the specific. If it is able to act as projecting karma, where wholesome and unwholesome volition brings about the future neutral fruit of the eighth consciousness, that is general retribution karma; if it acts as completing karma, where the seeds of volition of the three natures bring about future fruits of suffering, pleasure, and so forth, it is called specific retribution karma. The sixth consciousness generally creates both general and specific retribution karma; as for the first five consciousnesses, they only assist in giving rise to specific retribution and cannot give rise to the general, because of the two differences of strength and following along. 'Emerging from the six sense faculties' means that the six sense faculties are the instruments through which they create karma; since creation is from the faculties, reception is also received by the faculties, and thus it emerges from the faculties.
