8.518

其有修善而崇福者，只於人身酬彼力矣。今見積善之家財物多耗，或被劫盜，或被欠負，或橫遭驅役，或枉受捶打，斯皆先業合，捨此身為畜酬剩，由樹福德，人中略償；若成畜者，蓋無善矣。

Those who practice good and accumulate blessings will repay that strength simply within a human body. Today we see families that accumulate goodness lose much wealth, or be robbed, or be defaulted on, or undergo arbitrary forced labor, or unjustly suffer beatings: these are all former karma that would have required relinquishing this body to become animals and repay the excess; due to cultivating blessings and virtue, they pay it back slightly in the human realm. If they become animals, it is because they have no goodness.
