8.524

因於貪物，鬼託怪形，畜在土梟附塊而養。今歸人趣，其性顓蒙，雜在頑嚚，心忘德義，蓋因之故然也。而言參合者，夫人道受報，善因所招，總報雖同，滿業各異，故分十種。今此從畜來者，乃是餘業旁受，非正善業所招，然亦順後業感，由不正故，故言參合，他皆倣此。

Due to greed for things, as a ghost it relied on an anomalous apparition; as an animal it was a burrowing owl that nurtures by clinging to a lump of earth. Now returning to the human destiny, its nature is foolish and benighted, mixed among the stubborn and crooked, its mind oblivious to virtue and righteousness; this is indeed so because of the cause. As for saying 'mingling among': when humans receive retribution, it is brought on by good causes; though the general retribution is the same, the completing karma varies, hence it is divided into ten kinds. Now these that come from animals are lateral undergoings of residual karma, not brought on by primary good karma, yet they also accord with subsequent karmic influence; because they are not primary, it says 'mingling among'; the rest follow this pattern.
