慢習是因，鬼招飢餓，結氣而作，無實體性，畜受食類。人為柔弱，蓋因我慢貢高，反招柔怯之報。

The habit of pride was their cause: as ghosts they incurred starvation, formed of coagulated vapours without real substantial nature, and as animals they underwent rebirth in the edible category. As humans they are frail and weak, for by reason of self-pride and haughtiness, they contrarily incurred the retribution of timidity and weakness.
