"This concludes with the agent of realization. True thusness, the real mark, is called the non-arising dharma. The uncontaminated true wisdom is called forbearance. When obtaining this wisdom, one assents to and confirms the principle of the non-arising of dharmas, determinately without error; the mutual merging of object and wisdom is called the forbearance of non-arising. The first abode in the Avataṃsaka and the first bhūmi in other sūtras are the stages of attaining this forbearance. In the present sūtra, one already attains this forbearance at the third progressive stage, which differs remarkably from other explanations. Within this forbearance, according to what is realized, distinctions are established without difference, thus setting up the various stages; hence they are called the holy stages. Here, the first progressive stage correctly cultivates contemplative practice, the second progressive stage accomplishes contemplation and enters semblance, and the third progressive stage, having stated that one attains the forbearance of non-arising, is identical to the stages from the first abode up to equal enlightenment."
