This is the fulfillment of the teacher. In full it is "Buddha", which translates here as "Awakened One", meaning one who has awakened to and comprehended the nature and characteristics of the true and the false, namely the ultimate awakening. The Treatise says: "Because of awakening to the mind-source, it is named ultimate awakening; not having awakened to the mind-source, it is not ultimate awakening." Yet it possesses three meanings: first, self-awakening, awakening to the knowledge that one's own mind is originally free of arising and ceasing; second, awakening others, awakening to the fact that all dharmas are nothing other than suchness; third, perfected awakening, the principle of the two awakenings being roundly complete is called perfected. In the Treatise on the Buddha-Bhūmi, ten meanings are fully possessed: possessing all-knowledge and knowledge of all aspects, emerging from the affliction hindrance and the cognitive hindrance, awakening to and comprehending the nature and characteristics of all dharmas, able to awaken oneself and also able to awaken all sentient beings, like waking from a dream, like a lotus flower opening; hence he is called the Buddha.
