Cause and effect are non-dual; the non-dual essence originally pervades the dharmadhātu, hence they are called "great bodhisattvas." Avidyā is itself illumination, with nowhere to move, hence called "remaining in their own lands." Silently tallying with this principle, complying without contrariety, is called "joining their palms to listen reverently." The assembly is about to awaken to this principle, so this is demonstrated beforehand. In the *Lotus Sūtra*, after the One Vehicle was preached, the worlds of the ten directions became one single Buddha-land, likewise signifying that within the Buddha-lands of the ten directions there is only the Dharma of the One Vehicle. At the end of the third fascicle of the sūtra, the assembly grasps and awakens, which is what is signified here.
