Not understanding that the substance of the direct cause pervades both sentient and insentient beings, and merely grasping the mind that practices and slanders, he sees earth and wood as lacking the nature. When rebuked with 'this is not your mind,' having failed to discern it early on, he was driven to terror. Yet how could Ānanda truly not know? He simply acts on behalf of the future age, where many make this calculation, taking the false mind to be the Buddha mind. When the deluded are so numerous, they are difficult to awaken suddenly; therefore he raises doubts and objections repeatedly, requesting instruction.
