"Entering the Path at the initial stage, he had no understanding of overcoming and cultivating himself, but relied upon his close kin, expecting to be bestowed the correct attainment. How could he know that although the bodily precepts are obtained from the Buddha, mental concentration must be realized by oneself? That 'they originally cannot substitute for one another'—this is what it means. The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: 'All you monks, although your bodies have left the household life, have never dyed the robes of the Great Vehicle Dharma; although you have begged for food for many years, you have never once sought the food of the Great Vehicle Dharma.' Robes adorn the Dharma-body, and food sustains the life of wisdom; failing to recognize the original constancy, both robe and food are lost."
