"Because the nature of fundamental wisdom is thereby revealed and manifested, able to establish great meaning, it is called the 'great Dharma banner.' The secret treasury of the three virtues is neither vertical nor horizontal, neither combined nor separate; hence it is called 'wondrous.' The tenth stage sees it as though through gossamer silk; hence it is called 'subtle.' Only Buddha and Buddha can investigate it to the utmost; hence it is called 'secret.' Mind is the substance, and eye is the function."
