Fully called Mahāmaudgalyāyana, translated here as "Great Bean-Gatherer Clan," and also called "Chickpea," which was the venerable one's mother's surname. In high antiquity, ṛṣis relished this, and it was thereby used to name the clan. He was the disciple at the Buddha's left side, unsurpassed in supernatural powers. Later in the sūtra it says: "I roamed the ten directions attaining freedom from obstruction"; in the illumination of supernatural powers he is exalted as unexcelled.
