There is discrimination because of sound, and this discriminative nature is subject to arising and ceasing. The Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: 'Do not speak the Dharma of true reality with a mind that arises and ceases.' If speaking is impermissible, how could listening be permissible? A conditioning mind merely conditions words and letters, hence it says "not an attainment of the nature of dharmas." If one can forget conceptualizations and accord with the Dao, leave behind the marks of subject and object, not give rise to a single thought, and cut through past and future limits, this can be called truly attaining the nature of dharmas.
