Ādāna is translated as "grasping and holding" (upādāna); it is the eighth consciousness, because it is capable of grasping and holding seeds to produce manifest activities. The eighth consciousness has many names, but this name is the most widely encompassing, representing the stage of continuous grasping and holding among the three stages. Ignorance perfuming the seeds without cessation is like a raging torrent flowing on unceasingly; this subtle realm can be known only by a Buddha. Thus the Awakening of Faith says: "The consciousness arisen from the perfuming of ignorance is not something that ordinary beings can know, nor is it perceived by the wisdom of the two vehicles. It is observed on the basis of a bodhisattva from the initial resolve of correct faith; if one realizes the Dharma-body, one gains a partial knowledge of it, and even at the ultimate stage of a bodhisattva one cannot completely know it—only a Buddha fully penetrates it."
