The Buddha told Ānanda: "When I first tied the cloth, you called it a knot. This folded patterned cloth was originally a single piece; why do you and the others call the second and third ones knots as well?" Ānanda addressed the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, although this precious patterned cloth woven together was originally a single body, as I consider it, when the Tathāgata ties it once it receives the name of one knot, and if tied a hundred times it would ultimately be called a hundred knots. How much more so when this cloth has only six knots, neither reaching seven nor stopping at five! Why does the Tathāgata allow only the first to be called a knot, and not the second and third?"
