Being free from falsity and deceit at all times—if a person is like this, they truly seek the Path, and how could they not quickly arrive! If one displays outward signs and postures, deceitfully claiming to have attained the Path, inwardly cherishing flattering crookedness while outwardly plotting for renown, how could this be called cultivation? Thus the Lotus Sūtra says: 'Evil bhikṣus in the turbid world, with perverse wisdom and flattering crooked minds, claim to have attained what they have not attained, filled with arrogant conceits... even staying in patchwork robes in quiet wildernesses, falsely calling them araṇya—know that such as these entirely practice demonic deeds.'
