Managing the inner governance of the king is called inner stewardship. 'Governance' (zheng) is that by which one rectifies (zheng) what is not upright. Ministers and grandees are called 'houses'; the Son of Heaven and feudal lords are called 'states'. The empress and consorts of the Son of Heaven are called 'female rulers'; those of feudal lords are called 'consorts of state'. As for 'mandate' (ming), the husband is exalted at court, and the wife honored in the chambers; receiving a mandate from the empress and consorts, they are called 'mandated dames'. 'Matriarch' (dagu) refers to a woman whom the empress and consorts take as a teacher, like Cao Huiji. Within palace confines and state compounds, sights and sounds increase self-indulgence; if not aided by holy transformation, how could they yearn for pure chastity?
