"Mental penetration" refers to the stage of penetrating realization. As mentioned earlier, within one hundred days one with sharp faculties attains srotāpanna; this is attaining forbearance in one's very physical body. If superior conditions are fully met and one practices according to the Dharma yet does not attain forbearance, then the Buddhas would be speaking falsely—how then could the Tathāgata be a speaker of truth?
