If the observance of precepts is incomplete, the five conditions are lacking; how much more when serving as a teacher and model transmitting them to others—if one's own precepts are not pure, how could another's precepts be accomplished? Therefore, one must select the foremost pure one who truly confers the precepts. Hence the Brahmajāla Sūtra says: 'If there is no master who confers precepts within a thousand li, one should take the precepts by self-vow before the Buddha. First repent of the seven rebellious offenses, and subsequently seek the precept dharma; only when one sees an auspicious sign does one know that the sins are eliminated and the precepts obtained; otherwise, one does not obtain them.' Once the precepts are accomplished, dwelling quietly in a secluded place, burning incense and reciting the mantra to the full number of one hundred and eight signifies the eradication of the one hundred and eight afflictions. Inner precepts and outer mantra prevent demons from arising. Fearing obstacles to the altar platform, one must first pray to the currently dwelling Buddhas for the manifest empowerment of their light, so that the mind becomes valiant and advancement on the Path becomes ever faster.
