"Ānanda, you asked about collecting the mind; I have now first explained the wondrous gateway of training and study for entering samādhi. Those who seek the bodhisattva path must first maintain these four rules of discipline as bright and pure as ice and frost, so that no branches and leaves can naturally arise; for the three of the mind and four of the mouth, there will certainly be no cause for arising. Ānanda, if these four matters are not lost, the mind will not even grasp at sights, sounds, scents, tastes, or tangibles; how could any demonic affairs arise?"
