"Ānanda, when this good son upholds this mantra, even if he violated the prohibitive precepts prior to receiving [the mantra], after upholding the mantra, all sins of breaking precepts, regardless of whether they are light or heavy, will simultaneously be extinguished. Even if he has drunk alcohol or eaten the five pungent roots and various impurities, all the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, vajras, devas, immortals, ghosts, and spirits will not hold it as a fault. Even if he wears impure, tattered, and worn-out clothes, in every movement and resting he will be entirely pure. Even if he does not construct an altar, does not enter the place of enlightenment, and does not circumambulate the path, his merit in reciting and upholding this mantra is identical to entering the altar and circumambulating the path, with no difference. If he has committed the five grave sins with immediate retribution, or the four pārājikas or eight pārājikas of bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs, after reciting this mantra, such heavy karma will be like a fierce wind blowing away a heap of sand, entirely extinguished without leaving a hair's breadth."
