Whatever has the meaning of nourishing and benefiting is called sweet. Whatever is not properly digested and transformed and can destroy body and mind is called poisonous. The five pungent roots are garlic, scallions, leeks, wild chives, and asafetida. The nature of these five is hot, their vapor foul, and their flavor pungent; when cultivators eat them, they can kill the Dharma-body, just like eating poison, so they must be severed.
