Regarding 'direct nature': killing, stealing, and lust are by nature offenses, and are furthermore by nature the root of birth and death. However, drinking alcohol should properly be an auxiliary cause, but is now treated as a direct nature because its faults and evils are deeper than those of the pungent roots. Regarding 'purify food with fire': using the shallow to illustrate the profound, even fresh fruits must be purified food, how much more so wine, meat, lust, stealing, killing, and lying? In the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], the precepts against protecting against censure are equal to the major offenses of nature; therefore one must guard against the subtle to avoid incurring great faults.
