"Furthermore, Ānanda, within these three realms there are again four kinds of asura. If in the ghost destiny one enters space by mounting supernormal powers through the power of protecting the Dharma, such an asura is egg-born and subsumed under the ghost destiny. If one is degraded and cast down from the heavens because of a decline in virtue, and takes up a dwelling neighboring the sun and moon, such an asura comes forth from a womb and is subsumed under the human destiny. There are asura kings who sustain realms, whose power is penetrative and fearless, and who can contend for supremacy with Brahmā, the heavenly sovereign Śakra, and the Four Heavenly Kings; such asuras exist through transformation and are subsumed under the heavenly destiny. Ānanda, there is another inferior class of asura that is born in the depths of the great sea, dwelling submerged in the mouths of underwater caverns, roaming through space by morning and returning to lodge in the waters by evening; such an asura exists on account of moisture and is subsumed under the animal destiny."
