「二邊」，即生死、涅槃。故知三德之理，即寂而照故能持，即照而寂故能遮。
'Two extremes' refers to saṃsāra and nirvāṇa. Therefore we know that the principle of the three virtues is quiescent yet luminous, hence it is capable of maintaining; luminous yet quiescent, hence it is capable of warding off.
