'Five entrenchments': views of the three realms constitute one, thoughts of the three realms constitute three, and adding fundamental ignorance makes five. All are defiled and troublesome dharmas that agitate the nature of the mind; therefore they are collectively termed afflictions, and these afflictions are named 'tigers, wolves, and so forth.' The sūtra states, 'Purifying the roots of the three poisons, not being afflicted by the three poisons,' and so on, which is clear proof regarding practice. Hence, when the commentary below explains tigers and wolves, it cites the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra where even on the tenth stage there are perils of tigers and wolves—this was precisely its meaning. Cultivating the threefold contemplation in a single mind to break through the delusions of the five entrenchments is eliminating poison in terms of practice.
