此疏自智者演說、章安記錄，古來人師無聞贊述。既傳授道息，後學往往有不知其名者、知其名而未嘗披其卷者。於乎！斯文之未喪也，一綫爾。吾不肖，而實痛焉。吾如默默，則何以傳後？遂因疾間，輒約文敷義筆之為鈔，凡二卷，庶申明於大旨，開發於童蒙也。既成，乃作序以言其由，復作闡義之名以名之。

Since this commentary was expounded by Zhizhe and recorded by Zhang'an, no master of old has been heard to compose an exposition upon it. Because the transmission of its path lapsed, later students have often been ignorant even of its title, or knew its title but had never opened its scrolls. Alas! That this text has not perished hangs by a mere single thread. Unworthy as I am, I truly grieve over this. If I remained silent, how would it be handed down to posterity? Thereupon, taking advantage of a respite from illness, I have summarily drawn upon the text to unfold its meaning and committed it to the brush as subcommentary notes, in two fascicles in all, hoping to clarify its great purport and enlighten beginners. Once it was completed, I composed this preface to state its origins, and furthermore assigned to it the title 'Elucidating Notes' to name it.
