"Merely having names": meaning that once a jar is broken or a head is severed, there are merely the names of jar and head, but actually no substance. This metaphor comes from the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra. "This character does not abide" is emptiness of nature. "Nor does it not abide" is emptiness of characteristics.
