"Ultimate [truth] also has shallow and deep": The first three fruits see it partially and thus it is shallow; the fourth fruit realizes it completely and thus it is deep. They are also mutually shallow and deep. Since coarse and subtle, two conventionals, are divided, there should be shallow and deep, two ultimates. "In principle there are no two": Although seeing has shallow and deep, true emptiness is solely one. Since the biased ultimate is like this, the middle ultimate should be understood by analogy. This statement of shallow and deep cannot be interpreted using the dual ultimate truth of the shared teaching, for the text says "in principle there are no two." If it were according to the dual ultimate truth, there would clearly be two. Thus we know that the meaning of the answer proceeds from their respective standpoints.
