"Like smelting fine gold": The *Zhucong* says, "Melting gold to make it refined is called *lian* 鍊; boiling silk to make it pliable is called *lian* 練." Therefore the character should take the "metal" radical (金). The Commentary says "this is an overall praise," meaning it overall praises the cultivation of concentration and the learning of wisdom as being like smelting gold: repeatedly entering concentration, it turns ever clearer and purer. Moreover, smelting gold is a praise in terms of metaphor; clear and tranquil is a praise in terms of Dharma. The metaphor is overall while the Dharma is specific. Taken together, clarity praises wisdom, and tranquility praises concentration. The current phrasing saying "clarity praises concentration," etc., is an error in the text.
