2.40

「修行為語」者，約自行也。「從行以入理」者，即住前修行，至初住位分證本理，趣本之行故云本行。「化道」者，約化他也，故引勸學證之。「從本起行」者，依智修行也，是則智為行本。智家之行，故言本行。

"Speaking in terms of cultivation and practice" refers to self-cultivation. "Entering principle by means of practice" refers to the practice prior to the abiding stages, where, upon reaching the position of the first abiding stage, one partially realizes the fundamental principle; because it is the practice of advancing toward the root, it is called the "fundamental practice." "The path of conversion" refers to transforming others, which is why [the commentary] cites the exhortation to study to corroborate it. "Arising practice from the root" means cultivating practice in reliance upon wisdom; thus, wisdom is the root of practice. Because it is the practice belonging to wisdom, it is called "fundamental practice."
