The sūtra says "Mañjuśrī," which is translated here as Wondrous Virtue. If one sees the Buddha-nature, one then possesses the three virtues neither vertical nor horizontal; hence it is called Wondrous Virtue. "Youth": inwardly free of the love of Dharma, just as a worldly youth's feelings are without desire or defilement. From "precious is" downward: real wisdom is constantly abiding and unmoving; treasure is valuable and revered, so it represents the true mark and real wisdom. "Expedient": temporarily used and then set aside, like the moon waxing and then waning; hence the moon represents expedient, provisional wisdom. "Moonlight in terms of wisdom and severance": from the first day to the fifteenth, the light gradually increases, which illustrates the virtue of wisdom. From the sixteenth to the thirtieth, the light gradually decreases, which illustrates the virtue of severance. This is the meaning of the moon metaphor samādhi in the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra].
