From "due to extinction" onward, it means extinguishing the impermanent five aggregates of the nine realms and attaining the constantly abiding five aggregates of the Buddha realm. As for "severing the bonds and poisonous afflictions": "bonds" are afflictions, hence they are analogized to foul stenches. As for "this is also the goodness of cessation": masking foulness is like not killing and so forth. As for "ornately adorned": diao means patterned ornamentation. The Rites says, "Its people tattoo their foreheads"; the Jiayu says, "Vessels are not carved or falsified." Flowers can be adornments of beauty, just as merit can foster wisdom. "Active goodness" refers to releasing living beings and so forth. From "in samādhi" onward: without wisdom, samādhi cannot deepen its stillness; without samādhi, wisdom cannot exhaust its illumination.
