When the sūtra says "fears and terrors, and even sickness and disease," it should be interpreted with reference to the ten kinds of practitioners. "This retribution body" refers to the body obtained as retribution—that is, a person who is undergoing suffering as retribution. "Disease of ignorance": "ignorance" should be "five sense organs"; this is a scribal error. Red eyes and purulent ears are diseases of the five sense organs. "Even up to the perfect teaching": between them, the pratyekabuddhas and the three types of bodhisattvas are omitted, which is why it says "even up to." "Originally it is the dharmatā... the disease of..." is identical to the earlier phrase "non-defiled yet defiled," which is the poison of the principle nature. "That is, the disease is eliminated and becomes equal to dharmatā": because one realizes that ignorance is itself dharmatā, this is "defiled yet non-defiled," which is the meaning of eliminating and subduing. The previous section distinguished practice and principle; this section combines the two.
