"The buddha realm requires discrimination": one should ask, "The nine realms may be so, but how can the buddha realm invoke?" One should answer: buddhas of nominal and contemplative identity, to eliminate the three obstacles of fragmentary [samsāra], must invoke Avalokiteśvara of partial realization; buddhas of resemblance identity, to eliminate the three obstacles of change-transformation [samsāra], are also like this. Within partial realization, stages mutually perform this, up to equal enlightenment, where they invoke the ultimate Avalokiteśvara to eliminate the three obstacles. This is in terms of all five identities within the perfect teaching being named the buddha realm. If strictly taking the ultimate stage as the one able to invoke, it is because sentient beings' capacity to sever evil relies on Avalokiteśvara, hence [the Buddha] must invoke him; as the sūtra says: "At that time the World-Honoured One, pitying sentient beings and sheltering all, repeatedly invoked Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva..."
