From "bodhisattva" downward reveals the bodhisattva. "Within this contemplation" refers to worldly wisdom. Since afflictions are not yet severed, one uses only worldly wisdom, yet is able to contemplate impermanence, cultivate the six pāramitās, accomplish superior understanding, and ultimately transcend birth-and-death. "Kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity" are the four immeasurable minds. Out of kindness one gives joy; out of compassion one relieves suffering; seeing them freed from suffering and attaining joy, one has sympathetic joy; not seeking repayment of kindness, one has equanimity. Without choosing between foe and friend, one applies these four equally, hence they are called the four equals. "Endowed with all dharmas" means the complete cultivation of the ten thousand practices of the six pāramitās and four immeasurables. "Thirty-four mental moments" refers to the eight patiences and eight wisdoms that sever view-delusions, and the nine unhindered paths and nine paths of liberation that sever thought-delusions.
