Formerly, Tripiṭaka Master Buddhāpali traveled far across the shifting sands to pay homage at Mount Wutai. The Great Sage Mañjuśrī bestowed instruction upon him, whereupon he returned again to the Western Regions and brought back this sūtra. Thus, for saving and delivering [beings] in the Eastern Region, there is indeed nothing superior to this sūtra. Although it had previously undergone five translations, there had not yet been an exegete; how could its profound explications and subtle purports ever be mastered? Venerable Fachong of Qianfu [Temple] had once studied under the gate of Tripiṭaka Master Amoghavajra; with neither the teachings of the Great and Lesser Vehicles nor the Secret Treasury failing to be thoroughly mastered by him, he thereupon composed a commentary on it. As for its essence: it draws upon numerous scriptures and determines the essential points by a single principle; it contains the secret of eliminating disasters and dissolving misfortunes, the marvel of extending life and increasing one's years, the efficacy of having one's bones moistened by consecrated soil, and the benefit of having one's body brushed by dust blown [from a pillar]—entering this and emerging from that, turning the shallow into the profound; it truly grasps the intent of the sūtra! Master Ji of Nanshan lamented that those in the world who obtained the commentary were exceedingly few; collating clerical errors and correcting fallacies, he entrusted it to the printing blocks so as to propagate it across the seas. Recently, there was a reckless and mediocre fellow who arbitrarily trimmed the commentary's text and mixed in all manner of vulgar phrasing, like cutting up Shu brocade to patch tattered rags, or smashing a pearl of Sui to mix with rubble. Now to be able once again to behold the whole pearl and the complete brocade—is this not Master Ji's benefaction? Having long disliked worldly people delighting in the new while abandoning the old, on encountering this grand endeavor my rejoicing knew no bounds; I have therefore recounted these matters and moreover urge later luminaries to exert themselves in the study of restoring antiquity.
