Sixth, regarding the ritual protocol for listening to the Dharma: according to the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra, "The preacher of the Dharma must give rise to three kinds of thoughts: first, conceive the thought of being a king of physicians; second, conceive the thought of curing illness; third, conceive the thought of pulling out suffering. The listener to the Dharma must also give rise to three kinds of thoughts: first, conceive the thought of ambrosia (amṛta); second, conceive the thought of ghee; third, conceive the thought of dispelling illness." Furthermore, the Dàzhìdù lùn says: "The listener to the Dharma concentrates the mind and looks uprightly, as one who is thirsty yearns for drink, as one who is hungry yearns for food, rejoicing upon hearing the Dharma." Furthermore, the Dàzhìdù lùn says: "There are three ways of listening to the Dharma: first, revering and making offerings; second, receiving, upholding, reading, and reciting; third, tying mindfulness [to it] and reflecting upon it. First, revering and making offerings is good karma of the body; it can generate the wisdom born of hearing, and obtains three kinds of blessings: first, long life and the possession of human bodily marks; second, great wealth and abundant treasures; third, transformationally born from a lotus flower. Second, receiving, upholding, reading, and reciting is good karma of speech; it can generate the wisdom born of reflection, and obtains four kinds of blessings: first, people believe one's words; second, people comply with one's words; third, one's retinue is harmonious and reunited; fourth, one is not slandered. Third, tying mindfulness [to it] and reflecting upon it is good karma of the mind; it can generate the wisdom born of cultivation, and obtains three kinds of blessings: first, clothing and food come naturally; second, obtaining great dignity and beauty; third, obtaining great wisdom." This concludes the sixth, on the ritual protocol for listening to the Dharma.
