第八釋經題目，有其三種：一名佛頂尊勝陀羅尼、二名延壽、三名善吉祥。言佛者，三覺之號，故名為佛。頂者，一身之勝，立以名頂。尊者，三世如來，所共尊故，勝者，二乘所不及故。陀羅尼者，翻云總持，總持之義有其四種，具如上說，故言佛頂尊勝陀羅尼經。

Eighth, explaining the title of the sūtra: there are three titles: first, Uṣṇīṣavijayā Dhāraṇī; second, Prolonging Life; third, Auspiciousness. As for "Buddha", it is the designation of the three awakenings, hence named "Buddha". "Uṣṇīṣa" is the supreme part of the whole body, designated as the uṣṇīṣa. "Venerable" (vijayā/superior): because it is revered by the Tathāgatas of the three times. "Victorious": because it cannot be matched by the two vehicles. "Dhāraṇī" is translated as "retention"; the meaning of retention has four kinds, fully as explained above. Hence it is called the Uṣṇīṣavijayā Dhāraṇī Sūtra.
