The commentary says: This is the second, the fulfilment of hearing. It is also distinguished through three portals: first, explaining Ānanda's name; second, explaining Ānanda's causes; third, correctly explaining the word 'heard'. First, explaining Ānanda's name: this is Sanskrit, which in Chinese is Huanxi ('Joy'). Thus the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya says: 'King Siṃhahanu had four sons, all of whom became kings. The first was named Śuddhodana; the second, Śuklodana; the third, Droṇodana; the fourth, Amṛtodana. Śuddhodana had two sons: the first was named Siddhārtha, and the second, Nanda. King Śuklodana also had two sons: the first was named Bhaddiya, and the second, Tisya. King Droṇodana also had two sons: the first was named Devadatta, and the second, Ānanda. King Amṛtodana also had two sons: the first was named Mahānāma, and the second, Aniruddha. King Śuddhodana's eldest son, Siddhārtha, abandoned the status of a wheel-turning king at the age of nineteen, and at midnight in the hour of the rat on the eighth day of the second month, leaped over the city wall and left home. With single-minded determination he entered dhyāna, joined his palms, settled his mind, and sat, practicing austerities for six years, eating a hemp seed and a grain of wheat a day, his skin and bones connected. When the king heard this, he wept, sighed, and said: "My son abandoned the status of a wheel-turning king to gain nothing in vain." Later, after eating fragrant milk-rice, the Bodhisattva entered the Nairañjanā River, washed his body, went to the vajrāsana, and made this vow himself: "Without breaking this cross-legged posture, I will achieve equal and perfect enlightenment." Having spoken these words, heaven and earth shook, and Māra's palace was unsettled. At that time, when the heavenly Māra Pāpīyān saw that the Bodhisattva was about to accomplish the Path, he brought eighty koṭis of demonesses and ghosts of various forms to harass him, filling sixty yojanas, coming to terrify the Bodhisattva. At that time, the Bodhisattva entered the samādhi of loving-kindness, causing Māra's knives and arrows to turn into lotus blossoms. Māra knew he was no match, so he went to King Śuddhodana's palace to distress the royal father, announcing from the sky: "Your son died last night." Hearing this, the king was terrified and unconsciously fell from his couch; only after a long time did he revive, weeping tears and speaking a verse: "Asita's words were empty; the auspicious omens also lack verification. Previously obtaining an auspicious name, yet he attained nothing at all." When King Śuddhodana had spoken these words, the Bodhi tree deity, seeing that the Buddha had accomplished the Path, took heavenly mandārava flowers, went to King Śuddhodana's palace, and spoke a verse from the sky: "Your son has accomplished the Path; Māra's hosts have dispersed. His radiance is like the sun and moon, shining universally upon the lands of the ten directions." Then the king doubted, saying: "Earlier it was said that my son was dead; now you say he has become a Buddha. What are these words?" The tree deity replied: "The earlier one was the demon king who came on purpose to distress you; I am the Bodhi tree deity, who has now come to congratulate you." The king was then joyful and said: "My son abandoned the wheel-turning king to become a Dharma wheel king; between this and that, there is no loss." Just as King Śuddhodana was rejoicing, King Droṇodana came to report to King Śuddhodana: "My noble wife has given birth to a son." Hearing this, the king was joyful: "All celebrations have arrived together; because of this joy, he may be named Huanxi ('Joy')."' As the verse also says: 'His face is like the pure full moon, / his eyes like blue lotus blossoms; / the ocean water of the Buddha's Dharma / flows into Ānanda's mind.' This concludes the first, explaining Ānanda's name.
