1.47

第二顯林者，即是住誓多林，《大智度論》云：「為憐愍眾生，故住誓多林。」言住者，四威儀中是其一住。住有三種：一、天住；二、梵住；三、聖住。一、天住者，為布施、持戒、忍辱，得三事故得生天，名為天住。第二梵住者，為四無量心，慈，悲，喜，捨，得生梵天（乃至）非想非非想天，名為梵住。第三聖住者，為行空無相無願，住三空三昧，故名聖住。《智度論》云：「復有四種住：一、天；二、梵；三、聖；四、佛住。」前三住者，為聲聞緣覺等；四佛住者，首楞嚴三昧八萬四千諸法藏故，故名為佛住。言誓多林者，漢云最勝林也，即此城外東南五里有誓多林，即是祇陀太子所施之林。祇陀者，翻云戰勝王，故名戰勝也。此是第二顯林竟。

As for the second, revealing the grove: This means "staying in the Jetavana." The Dàzhìdù lùn says, "Out of compassion for sentient beings, he therefore stayed in the Jetavana." Regarding "staying" (dwelling), it is one of the four postures. There are three kinds of dwellings: first, divine dwelling; second, brahma dwelling; third, holy dwelling. First, divine dwelling: through generosity, upholding precepts, and patience, one attains three matters and thereby is born in heaven; this is called divine dwelling. Second, brahma dwelling: through the four immeasurables—loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity—one is born in the Brahmā heavens up to the heaven of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; this is called brahma dwelling. Third, holy dwelling: through practicing emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, dwelling in the three samādhis of emptiness; this is called holy dwelling. The Dàzhìdù lùn says, "Furthermore, there are four kinds of dwellings: first, divine; second, brahma; third, holy; fourth, buddha dwelling." The former three dwellings are for śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and so forth; the fourth, buddha dwelling, is on account of the Śūraṅgama samādhi and the eighty-four thousand treasuries of Dharma; therefore it is called buddha dwelling. As for "Jetavana," it is translated into Chinese as the "Supreme Grove"; five li southeast outside of this city is the Jetavana, which is the grove bestowed by Prince Jeta. "Jeta" is translated as "Victorious King"; hence it is called "Victorious." This concludes the second [aspect], revealing the grove.
