The commentary says: Fifth, pointing out the realm of rebirth. Regarding Jambudvīpa, according to the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya: 'To the south of Mount Sumeru, crossing the mountain, there is the Gandhamādana Mountain; to the south of the Gandhamādana Mountain is the great Himālaya Mountain; north of the Himālaya Mountain and south of the Gandhamādana Mountain is Lake Anavatapta. Beside the lake there is a grove called Jambu. Its trees are tall and large, and its fruits are sweet and delicious. Because of this grove, it is called Jambudvīpa.' The Loutan jing states: 'To the south of Mount Sumeru is called South Jambudvīpa; to the west of the mountain is called West Godānīya; to the north of the mountain is called North Uttarakuru; to the east of the mountain is called East Pūrvavideha. South Jambudvīpa is 280,000 li wide and long, broad above and narrow below, with 60,000 mountains and 500 great rivers. The human lifespan is 120 years; those who maintain the five precepts obtain rebirth among humans. Their bodies are three or four cubits tall; at first their lifespans were long, but at the end of the kalpa they become extremely short, down to ten years. West Godānīya is 320,000 li wide and long, shaped like a complete circle. Lifespan is 250 years; those who cultivate the lowest of the low grade of the ten virtuous actions obtain rebirth therein, and their bodies are sixteen cubits tall. Uttarakuru is 400,000 li wide and long, its land square. Lifespan is 1,000 years; those who cultivate the lowest of the high grade of the ten virtuous actions obtain rebirth therein, and their bodies are thirty-three cubits tall. East Pūrvavideha is 360,000 li wide and long, its land shaped like a half-moon. Lifespan is 500 years; those who cultivate the lowest of the middle grade of the ten virtuous actions obtain rebirth therein, and their bodies are eight cubits tall.' This Jambudvīpa is one among the four continents under heaven.
