Third, regarding the Mahāyāna sūtras: The *Avataṃsaka* states: 'Fully receive and uphold the teachings of deportment, practice the six harmonies and respects, well govern the great assembly, and have no sorrow or regret in mind; do not transgress the teachings of the true Dharma spoken by the Buddhas of the past, future, and present; you can then cause the Three Jewels not to be severed and the Dharma to endure long.' The *Mahāsaṃnipāta* states: 'The bodhisattvas of the worlds of the ten directions requested the Buddha to formulate prohibitive precepts for sentient beings with the five defilements, just as in other Buddha lands, for the sake of the Dharma's long endurance. The Buddha later consented to this and then formulated prohibitive precepts.' The *Satyaka-nirgrantha* states: 'If one does not observe the precepts, one will not even attain the body of a mangy jackal, how much less should one attain a body of merit!' The *Candrapradīpa-samādhi* states: 'Though one possesses fine looks, high lineage, and wide learning, if one lacks precepts and wisdom, one is like a beast; though one dwells in lowliness with little learning and experience, if one can purely observe the precepts, one is called a superior man.' The *Nirvāṇa* states: 'If you wish to see the Buddha-nature and realize the great nirvāṇa, you must cultivate and uphold the pure precepts with a profound mind. If you uphold this sūtra yet violate the pure precepts, you are the retinue of Māra and not my disciple; neither do I permit you to receive and uphold this sūtra.' The verse of the *Avataṃsaka* says: 'Precepts are the root of unsurpassed bodhi; / one should fully observe the pure precepts. / If one can firmly uphold the prohibitive precepts, / then one is praised by the Tathāgata.' Therefore, I cite it again to cause one to recite and engrave it upon the mind.
