Question: 'Someone says: "Offense and non-offense are ungraspable, which is called the precepts." What does this mean?' Answer: 'This does not mean that with a coarse mind of wrong view one says there is no offense. If one penetrates deeply into the characteristics of all dharmas and practices the samādhi of emptiness, because one observes with the wisdom-eye, one says offenses are ungraspable. If seen with the physical eye, one is no different from cattle and sheep. Today, those who recite the words of the Mahāyāna, their own strength already being weak, are incapable of these precepts; ashamed of their own foul conduct, they mostly do not uphold or practice them. Some cite this authority without understanding the original text; therefore, I give an indirect commentary here, as broadly explained in fascicle fifteen.' In the *Dharmaguptaka*, breaking the precepts has five faults: '1. Self-harm. 2. Being rebuked by the wise. 3. Bad reputation spreads abroad. 4. Regret arises at the brink of death. 5. Upon death, falling into the evil destinies.' In the *Daśādhyāya*: 'There are ten factors by which the true Dharma swiftly becomes extinct: There are bhikṣus who lack desire and are of dull faculties; although they recite phrases and meanings, they cannot receive them properly, nor do they understand them. They cannot cause those who receive them to have reverent deportment. Up to, taking no delight in the aranya practices. Furthermore, not following the teachings of the Dharma. Not respecting theras who lack deportment. Causing the younger generation not to receive and study the Vinaya, resulting in laxity and loss of all wholesome dharmas. Taking pleasure in composing verse and embellishing rhetorical phrases, because of delighting in worldly dharmas, the true Dharma swiftly becomes extinct; this is extremely terrifying.'
